- CASTROVILLARI Castrovillari, one of the most important cities of the Province of Cosenza, is situated at the foot of the Pollino Mountain massif. Remains of Neolithic age settlements have been found near Cozzo Palumbo to testify that this town was already inhabited at that time. It has preserved its Latin name Castrum Villarum and is still partly surrounded by walls built by the Roman soldiers. The town has an imposing Aragonese Castle with big cylindrical angular towers dating back to 1490 and has several Ancient Buildings built by nobles. On a hill which dominates the town center rises XI century Santa Maria del Castello Church. Rebuilt in the XVI century and often restructured, the cathedral contains superb paintings and remains of medieval frescoes. Attention should also be given to the 1090 Church of S. Giuliano, which has an imposing XVI portal and a museum of sacred art, as well as to the Franciscan Protoconvent. The medieval churches of the Trinity and of St. Joseph are also worthy of note. The Civic Archaeological Museum is extremely interesting and has pre-historic, Greek-Roman and medieval findings. Rich in folklore, the Castrovillari area includes many Albanian centers such as Frascineto, Civita, Lungro and Firmo. The wines and the local cuisine are very famous. POLLINO NATIONAL PARK The Pollino National Park, established in 1990, is one of the largest protected areas of Europe. Divided between Basilicata and Calabria, it includes the mountainous groups of the Pollino and of the Orsomarso and on the slope of the Cosenza Region, it comprises 32 villages. It forms a very rich and scientifically interesting ecosystem and hosts very rare species of plants and animals. The centuries old Loricate Pine, emblem of the Park, the white fir, the almost intact beech woods and the wolf, the roebuck, the otter, the royal eagle and the ibis. The presence of several rivers such as the Lao, the Argentino, and the Raganello, studded with waterfalls and springs, increases interest in the landscape of the Park. In the unbelievable variety of its scenarios visitors may practise several sports from mountain climbing to rafting, from stream walking to cross-country skiing and trekking to caving adventures.
